Screen flicker and then dead..

Actually it's a bit more complicated than it sounds..

Maz's pc has died a death.


Prior to its death she bought a new graphics card as the last one was corrupted when her ex tried to update its drivers and it wouldn't accept a driver roll back.

Life was good as the pc worked again.

It started having bad screen flicker during games, so we lowered all the possible to lower things (game quality etc).
This worked for a day or two before the flickering started again.
So we updated all the drivers possible to update from all the official sites.

Again, life was good for a few hours..

Again starts the flickering, this time the mouse would jar as well.
We ran a program she has that tells her what needs updating and noticed the Bios needed updating, so we dutifully checked out the motherboards official home page and noticed there was indeed a more up to date driver.

We figured it was the mother board that was causing the problems as we'd tried everything else (including the on-board graphics card just in case).
Seemed like the Motherboard wast talking to the graphics card as well as it should.

So, as i said, we downloaded the new bios and whilst I was at work she decided to update the bios.
So, update program trundles along happily, and the bios gets updated.
The pc needed a reboot, so rebooted it got.


And then didn't go anywhere.

The pc starts up, the fans all whir as a good fan should, lights flash on the keyboard, the mouse gets power, the monitor gets power (we've tried a couple of different monitors as well btw), and then the monitor goes in to standby mode, as it's not receiving anything from the tower unity.
All its power lights are fine and dandy.

The bios/start up doesn't even happen, so we cant get in to even Safe Mode to roll back the drivers..
We've taken the thing apart, cleaned it out, tried a different graphics card (as well as a different monitor again), reset the motherboard by doing the thing with the little black jumper, heck even a desperate case of taking the bios battery out, prayed to all the gods (real & fictional) said our devotions to the Omnisiah from 40k and butchered a bacon sandwich with extra crispy bacon and lots of ketchup in the (various) great ones names.

So.. any ideas?
The Wow Withdrawal Shakes have finally started to abate.

Allllllll righty....

The initial thought's as I read thru - sounds like a PSU issue.

Sounds odd I know, but bear with me on this one, the more modern graphics cards take quite alot of power to run, I read the DXDiag and it says you have a ATI Radeon 3600, I've checked there and

400 Watt or greater power supply (550 Watt for dual ATI CrossFireX™) recommended


Id check that the PSU has enough grunt to carry that much power often they slip a 300 or 350 into computers. a new PSU shouldn't set you back too much (if it is indeed what is playing up) £20 from Ebuyer for a budget model if money is an issue http://www.ebuyer.com/product/129422 make sure though if you change the PSU that it got all the correct connectors (the right amount of SATA & old types etc and the correct motherboard connector - tbh most these days are generic and cover them all).

Problem is once you step into the realms of changing components all over the place thats when the cost begins to rack up, it could be that the BIOS upgrade didn't take and thats causing a problem with a corrupted BIOS altho that certainly doesn't explain why it started going wrong! Or it could be a thermal issue, AMD processors like to run hot, very hot - but if the fan has packed in that will burn the CPU out in no time. Check by taking the lid off and turning the PC on check the fans all fire up an uncooled CPU can overheat in no time.

Finally check everything is seated correctly, take it all out then reseat it (cards, memory etc).

If all else fails, then for a small fee (no idea how much) you can try taking it to the Tech Guys at PC World (even tho I dont like them) they'll be able to diagnose the problem (hopefully).

Hopefully you'll get up n wow'ing soon mate.
